The Toppling of Balance

A column of tholeiitic basalt, part of the North Mountain Basalt lava flows of Jurassic age, between Tiverton and Central Grove in Digby County, Nova Scotia, Canada.

When you think of balance what comes most immediately to mind? Many of us would think of a scale, as in the Zodiac sign of Libra, the old-fashioned type where you had to equalize the weights of each of the scale’s trays. Or, maybe some of you think of a linear line, possibly considering the phrase, I’ll meet you in the middle, something commonly heard or thought of during times of crisis and compromise. And while I think of both, these days when I think of balance, I see in my mind’s eye, the many balancing rock formations precariously located around the world. I imagine them and I ask myself, why not us? Continue reading

Chip: The Dark Soul of O’Reilly, Fox News and its effect on the 🐘

Say the words, the old white man with the chip on his shoulder. It rolls off the tongue like classical literature, something reminiscent of The Old Man and the Sea.  And like the Hemingway story, the tale of the Bill O’Reilly, Roger Ailes and Fox News decades-long partnership could endure in similar fashion except it would evoke dark images of reprisal, corruption, bitterness and jealousy.

That’s because the main thing the newsman has wrought upon us, his biggest contribution to society left in his wake is his counterculture, dismissive and hateful viewpoint, fed to us in the guise of no-spin, no bull shit discussion.

As reported in Media Matters, “Fox News Bill O’Reilly has helped set the bar for the normalization and dissemination of right-wing hatred…” And, it’s that same coziness with the alt-right that now threatens to bring everything crashing to the ground.  The problem is Ailes, O’Reilly and others still at Fox forgot something about the hateful demographic they were trying to invigorate and seeking to control; and that is that it will get under your skin and become a part of you. The Big Trump Story

Hello everyone.  Here we are on April Fool’s Day, a day of pranks and misdirection and that might be more appropriate than you’d first think..

It’s only been less than two-thirds of the way towards the first 100 days of the Trump Administration and the news stories just keep on coming.  Tell me, how are you all keeping up?   There’s so much to choose from and every one of them is seemingly so relevant and sensational.  It’s the epitome of “for real” reality TV.  My concern is that a lot of them  might be nothing more than smoke screens.

It’s not to say that these accounts aren’t significant or newsworthy; they are.  But it’s occurred to me that maybe we ‘prioritize’ the news to get to the nitty-gritty.  That’s the challenge; so, what pray tell is the nitty-gritty? Continue reading

Liar, Liar, World on Fire: Donald Trump, Republicans and their Long War on Truth

It appears that Trump, the businessman and Trump, the candidate, as well as Trump, the President of the United States, seem to all have difficulty with facts.  That’s at first glance.  But if you look at the totality of the title and situations involved, you come away with a much harsher assessment.  It could be said that all of his incarnations are spun from an identical bolt of cloth.  If that’s the case then unfortunately, it doesn’t create circumstances that bode well for America.  That’s because basically it means that Donald Trump is a liar.   And he’s not alone.

People vs. the President, Chaos and the New World Order

Who knows in four years?

Who knows in four years?

“…You been slipping into darkness, pretty soon you gonna pay.”

As much as I’m afraid-dubious, skeptical, worried, take your pick-of all that’s occurred so far in this short span of Trump’s administration, something went down that was even more troubling and systemic of where we could wind up eventually.  It illustrated exactly how we shouldn’t be acting in protest or defiance of all that our newly-elected President has put forth.  If you haven’t guessed, I’m talking about the recent demonstration on the campus of UC Berkeley.
