Constitutional Sheriffs, Papers and a Broken Tail Light

The rule of law: there was a time when it would be no question of exactly what those four words mean.  Now, I’m not so sure; we’re bucking directly up against notions so un-American and un-constitutional that it makes you wonder where ultimately we’ll all end up, especially with an avowed alt-right persona (white supremacist) in a prominent position in the White house.  And conservatives wonder where the comparisons to Hitler and Nazi Germany come from.

Anyway, in his efforts to enforce immigration laws and build a large and “highly touted deportation force”, Trump seeks to revive a program that the Obama administration had its difficulties with.   ABC News reported that the president looks to utilize local law enforcement as a first line of defense for immigration.  These officers would have arrest powers and could detain those found to be here illegally.  But the program was phased out in 2009 after complaints of racial profiling arose.  Many argued that the stops themselves were unwarranted as there existed no real reason for them.   You guessed it; there were a surprisingly, inordinate amount of “broken” tail lights out there plaguing the immigrant community.

And if that weren’t enough to make you lose sleep-if you’re not already-then there’s more.  How many of you have heard of the CSPOA, the Constitutional Sheriffs and Peace Officers Association?  I learned of them last summer from an intelligence report from The SLPC, the Southern Law Poverty Center.  You can access that report, Line in the Sand, here.  It was not a calming or enjoyable read.

Rather, it illustrated just how dangerous it is as the very people who’ve taken vows to protect, serve and uphold are now going off on their own tangent agenda and stand steadfast to refuse to enforce laws they don’t agree with. And now, with the election of Donald Trump and the rollout of his new immigration policies, it possibly could get a lot more insidious.

I’m worried that these officers, buoyed by the election of a like-minded president, will throw caution to the wind, especially as it pertains to the detainment, arrest and deportation of marginalized immigrants or American citizens.  I worry that their numbers will grow to the extent that they fully infiltrate the nations police forces.  We already see that the Trump administration is not big on providing an explanation before implementation and choose rather to just let sh*t fly and let nature takes its course.   In their world, the strong will survive and strong seems to be synonymous with the right and also with white.  Just saying.

Trump likes to imply that he’ll get re-elected and be with us for a total of eight years.  If so, by then we’ll all be required to carry papers identifying ourselves as American citizens of this type or another.  Once that happens, the powers that be who’ve denied this rapid descent into Autocracy will finally believe all that we liberals have been saying.  Except by then, it will be too late.
