A Divine Funny

I’m going to characterize it like this; it should be obvious that God has a sense of humor.  What is it that makes me make such a bold, theological pronouncement, you ask?  Why, only because the poster boy for the month of February for the Philadelphia Eagles 2015 Team Calendar is none other than Riley Cooper, I’d answer.

If you recall, Riley’s notoriety comes from his videotaped diatribe about his, shall we call them, pugilist abilities; yes, that’s what we’ll call them.  It was in the summer of 2013, at a Kenny Chesney concert at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, after an argument with a black security guard that Cooper proclaimed his capabilities to all within earshot.

You can see an abbreviated video of the altercation here.  It’s short and doesn’t include the entire argument with the guard but you’ll hear enough to know what the fuss was all about.

Afterwards Cooper apologized to the entire Eagles squad, was fined and suspended for four days.  Fellow Eagles Mike Vick and Jason Avant vouched for him and that stopped any further dissention.

It might have been the end of it for the team but the public continued to have their opinions.  Pundits were passionate about their views.  Some people thought it disingenuous to demonize a man for using the same word heard commercially and colloquially time and time again.

It was, still is and always will be for many I guess, a matter of context.

For its part, the Eagles have denied any involvement in the production of the calendar saying in a statement that the team (does not) provide any input about the players who are featured or where those pictures appear in the calendar.

Even if you don’t believe in God, you have to recognize the irony of the situation that fate, luck or fortune has lain at our feet.  And on such a month as this, Black History Month, it compels us to recognize the satire that unrepentant hypocrisy can produce.  I’m just saying…
